A Message from keynote speaker Stephen Baker, author of The Numerati
May 14, 2010

I'm very excited to be speaking at the EnZee Universe next month. I was just remembering the first time I ever heard about Netezza. It was 2007. I'd just returned to BusinessWeek following my one-year leave to write the Numerati. One of my first stops to get back into news was at Carnegie Mellon in Pittsburgh, where I've always enjoyed talking to the computer scientists and robot-makers.

They told me that scientists at their university had a big problem. Whether they were biologists, geologists, or even studying marketing, they were suddenly grappling with humongous sets of data. It was the data they'd dreamed of their entire careers: Detailed data, much of it tagged for changing location and time. Yet they lacked machines to run it all on. In fact, they couldn't even share this data with colleagues on the network. It was too massive. They had to Fed-Ex it.

CMU and the rest of academia, the professors told me, needed data-intensive computing. Following this thread would eventually lead me to Google, and a story on cloud computing. But I remember asking a professor at CMU if there were other companies, beside the big Internet companies, that developed this type of computing. He pointed me to Netezza.

Ah, I thought. A future story. But within months my book came out. The financial markets imploded while I was on my tour promoting it (This wasn't great timing). What's more, that crash devastated BusinessWeek, which was already struggling. Last December, the magazine was sold to Bloomberg at a firesale price. I left and got a contract for a new book. It's about data. In fact, the main character is a prodigious computer. I'm looking forward to talking about it this June at Netezza.
