Members Leverage Netezza’s Patented Streaming Architecture for Advanced Analytic Development to Accelerate Mission-Critical Initiatives
SC07, Reno, Nev. — November 13, 2007 — Netezza Corporation (NYSE Arca: NZ), the global leader in analytic appliances, today announced significant momentum for the Netezza Developer Network (NDN) within government organizations around the world. The NDN is a program that enables developers to leverage Netezza’s high-performance, streaming analytic™ appliance platform to develop applications and algorithms for advanced analytics on large amounts of data.
Since its launch at Netezza’s User Conference in September, the NDN has grown rapidly, with more than 125 membership applications submitted to date from government and commercial organizations across Australia, Europe and North America, and more than 30 organizations trained. NDN members include: Carnegie Mellon University, Catalina Marketing, Decision Intelligence Incorporated, Epsilon, Fair Isaac, Ingrian, Intelligent Integration Systems, Inc. (IISi), Multi-Threaded, Inc., NetMap Analytics, Sandia National Laboratories, SAS, SciDAC Outreach Center and SPSS, as well as several government organizations worldwide, including the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the Canadian Federal Government.
Within the government sector, national security, defense and civilian agencies are actively participating in the NDN, creating mission-critical applications for monitoring suspicious activity, managing logistics and resources, and protecting civilian lives, including:
The Netezza analytic appliance’s patented streaming architecture brings processing power right to the data, eliminating unnecessary data movement to deliver high performance and appliance simplicity. Netezza has extended the capabilities of its appliance by bringing analytics to the data – embedding complex non-SQL algorithms used by analytics applications within the NPS appliance so they can be run “on stream,” as fast as the data streams off the disk.
Real-World Mission-Critical Applications
Netezza partner and NDN member Multi-Threaded, Inc. (MTI), a system engineering
and software development firm, provides solutions for defense and civilian government
agencies to manage their massive data. These organizations use national security
applications that rely on fuzzy name searches to perform complex analyses on
billions of text records, but fuzzy text analytics are virtually impossible
via a SQL interface, and sampling methods must be used to identify matches.
With Netezza’s on stream computing platform, MTI can now run fuzzy name
searches across large-scale data sets in near real-time.
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), an early NDN member, is a premier research and development institution for science and technology applied to national security, responsible for ensuring that the nation’s nuclear weapons remain safe, secure and reliable. LLNL also applies its expertise to prevent the spread and use of weapons of mass destruction and strengthen homeland security. “Accelerating advanced data analytics is critical to our national security mission,” said John R. Johnson, research program manager, Center for Applied Scientific Computing, LLNL. “Active research and development collaboration with industry, such as we have with Netezza through the Netezza Developer Network, helps us rapidly deliver advanced capabilities to meet the nation’s large scale science and technology challenges.”
“By opening up our streaming architecture to innovative developers across government organizations, we offer them the ability to develop advanced analytics that weren’t possible before,” said Justin Lindsey, CTO, Netezza Corporation. “With this newfound analytic power at their fingertips, these organizations are able to understand trends and patterns faster and more thoroughly to thwart terrorism, protect assets and ultimately save lives.”

Developers and organizations interested in joining the Netezza Developer Network
can stop by Netezza’s booth #168 at SC07 and fill out an application describing
their on stream application ideas. Applicants will be eligible to win a Netezza
SPUBox™ (a development environment containing four of Netezza’s
innovative Snippet Processing Units) and gain membership into the Netezza Developer
Network. The SPUBox will be granted during Netezza’s Exhibitor Forum session,
Wednesday, November 14 at 10:30AM, where John R. Johnson of Lawrence Livermore
National Laboratory and Justin Lindsey, CTO, Netezza Corporation will discuss
the innovation behind advanced analytic applications and their applicability
in supercomputing environments. Additional information on the NDN and application
forms can be found online at www.netezza.com/ndn.
An NDN team member will be onsite at Netezza’s booth during exhibit hours
to answer questions.
