BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE BLOOMS AT FLORAHOLLAND
Netezza data warehouse appliance powers dramatic performance improvements and enables RFID tracking to take root
Framingham, Mass. and Bracknell, Berkshire — 18 June, 2007 — Netezza Corporation, a leading provider of data warehouse appliances, today announced that FloraHolland has selected the Netezza Performance Server® (NPS®) system to power its Business Intelligence (BI) efforts - as well as an innovative project to track valuable flower trolleys using RFID (radio frequency identification). The world’s largest trader of plants, flowers and horticultural products is replacing its SQL Server system to address the tuning and performance issues it faced under a rapidly growing volume of logistical and transactional data and number of users.
Hans Uithol, CIO at FloraHolland explains, “Our technology challenge was already significant. We faced an escalating number of concurrent users wanting to perform more ad hoc and complex BI queries. We also wanted to introduce RFID technology that had the potential to grind our existing infrastructure to a halt. This was further exacerbated a few months ago with the proposed merger with the flower auction company Aalsmeer, which will potentially double the size of our operation. With Netezza, we analyze data related to transport and logistics as well as our commercial transactions much better and faster – it’s fundamental to our business success. Staying well-informed helps us to better manage our relationships with growers and buyers as well as to define product strategy and pricing. BI is also core to our ability to monitor service level compliance and employee efficiency – as well as to measure and control error margins.”
Supplied by the Company’s BI services partner and systems integrator, Inergy, FloraHolland’s two new NPS systems have already completed proof of concept testing against five years of historical data – over 500 million records. The Netezza appliances returned the Company’s queries on average around 30 times faster than its existing system and 200 times faster on some queries.
Dave Kloc, vice president, European Operations for Netezza added, “Our appliances continue to prove popular in innovative organizations where data centers are struggling to keep pace with terabytes of constantly growing and changing data, as well as with demanding business users that need to be able to analyze it in real-time. If you then factor in the immense volume of data that tracking valuable trolleys using RFID tags has the potential to generate, the need for a paradigm shift away from traditional data warehousing systems becomes obvious.”
FloraHolland estimates a 120,000 Euro savings each year from the recovery of lost flower trolleys using RFID technology to track and trace them. Worth around 600 Euros each, they are otherwise easily misplaced as they move around the world.
The Netezza Performance Server system is a market-leading data warehouse appliance that stores, filters and processes the data within a single unit. This allows the NPS system to speed through processes that would occupy most data warehouse systems for hours, or even days, thereby enabling dramatic increases in productivity for FloraHolland.
