To compete on analytics successfully businesses need to understand
not only historical information and what's happening now
but also what WILL happen in the future. Using predictive analytics,
businesses can predict what's going to happen next, before
it happens, so action can be taken, such as preventing customer
churn through better, more personalized offers, tracking SKUs
before a huge sale to make sure supply meets demand or preventing
a crime based on telco calling patterns. Forward-looking customers
are employing Netezza appliances to predict these types of patterns
and behaviors:
Catalina Marketing
Catalina houses 100+TB on Netezza, enabling targeted promotions
through rapid accessibility of 400B market basket records
from 22,000+ retail locations every day. Catalina performed
an attitudinal analysis of households that determined, based
on historical purchasing behavior, which use milk to lighten
their coffee and may be convinced to utilize a branded product.
Because Catalina was able to increase the efficacy of their
analysis, the customer was able to increase the ROI of its
marketing campaign by over 30%. Learn

Beyond these SQL-based analyses, the performance, cost and
simplicity advantage of Netezza's appliances has enabled Netezza
customers to push the boundaries of analytics, performing
non-SQL analyses that were previously too slow, expensive
or even impossible with traditional data warehouses. Instead
of moving enormous amounts of data out of the data warehouse
to an analytics server for processing, Netezza is bringing
analytics to the data — embedding complex non-SQL algorithms
used by analytics applications within the NPS appliance so
they can be run "on stream," as fast as the data streams off
the disk. Netezza appliances are laying the foundation for
a new generation of analytics which were previously impossible,
impractical or unaffordable within traditional data warehouse
solutions. Examples include:
Predictive Model Scoring
Many companies use predictive modeling to finely segment their
customers and make real-time decisions about promotions, pricing,
fraud and other applications. This typically involves a time-consuming
process: after transaction data is loaded into the data warehouse,
the company performs large extracts to a separate cluster
server system. The data must be denormalized and then fed
back into a predictive modeling application for the actual
scoring. Eventually, a score for each customer is loaded back
into the data warehouse. The total round-trip can take hours,
dominated by the latency of large data transfers. This entire
process can now be done within the Netezza appliance, in a
fraction of the previous time, enabling real-time offers and
promotions to the right customers.
Geospatial Analytics
A global risk management firm demands real-time access to
geospatial and relational data to minimize risk and maximize
premiums, but catastrophe modeling queries took 6 to 8 days
to run and sometimes never completed. With Netezza's on
stream solution, queries can be executed in near-real time
- allowing organizations to more effectively identify and
respond to catastrophic scenarios.
Enhanced Fuzzy Name Search
National security applications rely on fuzzy name searches
to perform complex analyses on billions of text records, but
fuzzy text analytics are virtually impossible via a SQL interface
and sampling methods must be used to identify matches. With
Netezza, fuzzy name searches are run on the entire database
in near-real-time - enhanced fuzzy name searches that
required 6 hours can run in 8 seconds "on-stream!"
Telco Dynamic Billing and Pricing
Telcos demand real-time execution of rating and pricing structures
to sustain competitive advantage, but significant throughput
limitations and poor performance make these analyses extremely
difficult, complex and costly to run. Using Netezza, new applications
are made possible, including re-pricing analyses for "what-if"
market scenarios, just-in-time rating decisions for high transaction
rate billing systems and cost and revenue re-rating for margin
analyses.
Netezza is driving innovation in analytics through the Netezza
Developer Network (NDN). Developers of analytic applications
