The Move to Appliances
Cast
Iron Systems is not the only information appliance
vendor to get attention. In a recent report, the market
research firm IDC argued that data warehouse appliances
are gaining in popularity and fulfilling "real, existing
needs of a specific segment of the market." Companies
surveyed for the report listed lower total cost of
ownership, lower maintenance requirements and faster
deployments as the top reasons for evaluating a data
warehouse appliance that combines server, storage and
software into a single preconfigured bundle. IDC
estimates that the data warehouse appliance market will
have a combined average growth rate of 70 percent over
the next five years if the current rate of organic
growth continues.
5
Minute Briefing talked to Ellen Rubin, vice president of
marketing at Netezza, which has pioneered the data
warehouse appliance category to find out what was
driving the growth. "According to IDC, 23 percent of
organizations expect their data warehouse to at least
double in size over the next three years," she said.
Data warehouse appliances offers strong
price/performance, simplicity and ease of management.
Moreover, she noted, Netezza itself has been certified
to operate with a wide array of business intelligence
and data integration vendors. Indeed, single-purpose
computing seems to be a growing trend. For more about
Netezza, go here.
