Netezza Corp., a provider of data management appliances, appointed Jon Niess to vice president of international operations, a new position for the company.

Before joining Netezza, Niess served as senior vice president of worldwide sales operations at Vignette Corp. Prior to that, Niess was area vice president at Oracle Corp.

"This is a new position. We're just starting our international operations," said Netezza Chief Executive Jit Saxena. Niess, according to Saxena, "was brought in to scale that operation."

Niess will lead the company's overseas offices in Bracknell, England and Sydney. The Sydney operations are new; a team of three marketing and sales professionals were hired for the new office.

Saxena said the Australian market is attractive because he sees potential customers in the data warehousing market there and because the location makes a good jumping point to Asia.

Founded in 2000, Netezza develops combined server, storage and database appliances that are designed to analyze terabytes of data. The Netezza Performance Server - which can range in size from 400 gigabytes to 27 terabytes - filters and processes records in order to answer specific queries.

Saxena said 2004 sales have grown 180% over 2003, its first year of revenue.

Netezza's customers range from retail and advertising to telecommunications companies, and include AT&T Wireless Services Inc., CNET Networks Inc., Epsilon Systems Solutions Inc., Orange UK, Premier Inc., Shoppers Drug Mat Corp., Acxiom Corp. and Amazon.com.

Founded in 2000 and based in Framingham, Mass., the Company has raised more than $68 million. In late December, the company closed a $15 million Series D funding, led by new investor Meritech Capital Partners, with participation from Matrix Partners, Charles River Ventures, Battery Ventures and Sequoia Capital.

The CEO isn't planning any more rounds of venture capital. "At this point, we're just building the business."

The company has 150 full-time employees. Most of the research and development is in Framingham, Mass., with sales offices around the country.
