Sun Microsystems' retiring
President Ed Zander announced on Monday he was joining the board of
Netezza, a start-up company that aims to build computers dedicated to
analyzing customer and marketing data.
Zander and Jit Saxena, the chief executive of Boston area-based
Netezza, in an interview ahead of the announcement, both ruled out Zander
taking over the top post at the company.
"My focus is being a board member and nothing more," said Zander, who
has joined a recent exodus of Sun executives retiring July 1, adding that
he still planned to take time off during the summer to consider whether to
become chief executive at another firm.
Netezza aims in two or three months to begin shipping machines with
proprietary hardware and software and prices starting at around $500,000.
"This is an appliance for this specific market of business
intelligence," Zander said, noting that companies need better and less
expensive ways to analyze data about customers and their own processes.
